Legendary singer, Etta James, is battling end stage leukemia and dementia. While she is fighting for her life, her sons have been battling their stepfather for control over her $1 million estate.

The singer's two sons requested that conservatorship be transferred to them for a short time from her husband over concerns about the costs of her medical care and treatment. Recently, the sons reached an agreement with the singer's husband that allows him to remain conservator of her estate. However, a California judge will only release $350,000 for her medical care, slightly less than the $500,000 the singer's husband originally requested.

The singer married her husband in 1969. He says he spends around $30,000 each month to provide her with a private doctor and nursing care.

The sons also requested that the singer be brought to the hospital to be sure she is receiving the best care possible. Unfortunately, the same California judge declined the request, and left any medical decisions up to her current physicians.

While the singer's sons and her husband were engaged in a dispute, one son pointed out that he is simply doing whatever he can to keep the singer alive for as long as possible.

Etta James is best known for her songs, "At Last" and "Tell Mama." Over the years, she battled drug addiction and had problems with her weight. Although friends say she was a stubborn and strong woman, she now requires medical care every hour of the day.

It is never easy for people to deal with decisions surrounding a terminally ill family member's medical care. Because emotions often run high in those types of situations, conflicts can arise. Those in California who find that a family member can no longer manage their own affairs would likely benefit from consulting with an experienced attorney to determine the best course of action.
